What's New in August 2012
LARGE Panoramas - Suitable for enormous prints metres wide.
These photos all come from one big trip up into New South Wales over the course of several days. I spent about half the time exploring further into the Blue Mountains than I'd previously gone and the other half milling around the coast of the greater Sydney region.
The Bluies, of course, never fails to impress. Even when the light is boring, it's still a thrill to go hiking and scout new locations to shoot. The Kanangra area in the southern end of the park I'd not seen before. I really liked the way the sun penetrated that big ravine to spotlight certain cliffs. However my favouriate shot of the trip was taken further north, more or less by chance.
I'd only just found the camping area at Perrys Lookdown and decided I almost had enough time to catch the sunset. With the clock ticking I'd scrambled along the cliff establishing a nice composition, possibly being a tad more daring than was wise, only to lose the light behind clouds. I was about to throw in the towel when the sun made a last dash across the valley, piercing some heavy haze and making straight for my lens. It looked spectacular, all the more so because I wasn't expecting it.
After the Bluies, I headed north and tried my luck with the light at Avalon. I'd a shot in mind which I'd failed to get a few times now, and this was no exception, however surprisingly a completely different composition fell into place instead. Nice.
At Gosford and kindly couple let me shoot from their private pier. (Thanks!), while back in the CBD I spent some time ticking off a couple of the more classic city locations. You have to do the classics too, even if they have been shot a million times before.
All too soon the trip was coming to a close. There was, however, yet one more surprise. On the big drive home I detoured past Blowering dam searching for shots. Getting pretty tried I found myself looking for a somewhere to camp, eventually ending up at Tumbarumba. The locals were keen for a chat, and pretty soon I was directed towards a scene that demanded to be shot, an old car overlooking verdant farmland. Incredibly the light came through for me one last time, casting rays of golden sun over the landscape, while dark storm clouds threatened overhead. What a grand way to finish the trip!
