NSW Cliffs & Rivers
< Previous Entry
G'day and welcome back to another blog entry. This series of images was captured over the course of a couple of NSW trips, with myself and our young lad, as well as at least one local adventure closer to home. We focused on photographing familiar locations as well as finding some new subjects to point our cameras at. As usual the exact dates were predetermined so it was a question of juggling travel destinations to maximise the weather conditions granted to us.
The biggest challenge was probably doing an overnight hike from Guthega to Valentine Hut in Kosciuszko National Park. A steep 18km walk, we were well and truly tired on the way in, flopping down on the grass beside the hut and gratefully shedding heavy packs. The sunset did not deliver much, but fortunately during the following dawn we had a nice warm sky to match that bright red paint of the cute little dwelling.
We had carried tents, but decided to sleep in the hut to save the hassle of putting them up. It was a very cold night, but a hot meal and warm sleeping bags got us through. The trek back out, being mostly downhill, went quite a bit quicker. Next time I would like to push further into the Jagungal Wilderness, maybe approaching from the opposite direction. Carrying 8.5kgs of camera gear on top of hiking equipment, water and food has got me thinking about lighter alternatives to some items, probably starting with the pack itself. If I come up with a good solution I will be sure to mention it here in the future.
The other new area we explored was Clarke Gorge which is possibly the best short 5km walk in the northern end of Kosciuszko. The path weaves its way alongside and across Cave Creek which is dominated by spectacular 400 million year old limestone cliffs that rise dramatically above. We managed to have some good light at the beautiful Cooleman Falls, but it took several repeated dawns and sunsets to come up with anything of the gorge itself. Compositions were everywhere, but the light was quite elusive despite putting several days into it.
The most fun aspect of this walk is the seven river crossings to negotiate. We settled on using gum boots and keeping our feet warm and dry. This choice of footwear also allowed for standing in the cold river for extended periods whilst waiting for the light. That said, our lad came very close to a boot full of water several times, though he loved every minute of it. My recommended approach for normal walkers would be using an old pair of sneakers and simply ploughing through the water.
We did see one poor chap take an epic fall into the stream. Fortunately that appeared to result in nothing more than wet clothes and an embarrassed expression, but given the slippery rocks it could have been more serious. Lots of families with kids out on this track however, so plenty of people around to assist. Definitely a fun walk.
Further north towards Canberra we did some more hiking, this time into Red Rock Gorge along the Murrumbidgee River. The gorge walk begins in what almost feels like suburbia, but soon transforms into a wild and rugged landscape deeply divided by the impressive rapids and pools of the strongly flowing stream. Our boy and I sat waiting for the sunset at an overlook at appealed. The red cliffs are home to Peregrine Falcons, so we kept an eye out, but unfortunately did not spot one. We did however, witness some wonderful colours in the sky and greatly enjoyed just soaking up the view. A cracker of a walk, well recommended.
Another notable success during this period came from returning to Curracurrong Falls in Royal National Park just south of Sydney. The weather on this evening hike was wild indeed, with wind gusts battering us as we made our way along the sea cliffs. Having been here several times before it did not take long to set up an anchor system so that I could safely approach the drop. The wind rising off the crashing waves was more than enough to push the falls upwards, making them appear to be flowing in two directions simultaneously. At times gravity won, at other moments the fresh water went around for another go before plunging into the sea. This effect generated the kind of dramatic atmosphere that all landscape photographers love.
An exciting scene to witness but a challenge to photograph even with a heavy tripod. Fortunately cameras have come a long way, and I obtained tack sharp images in the last of the golden light. What great experience, and hopefully also a great image.
I have also included a couple of images from much earlier in the year, captured during a local trip here in Victoria. My favourite of those was the shot overlooking Tidal River in Wilsons Promontory, mainly because it turned out so well despite my expectations being quite low. I had been up before the dawn, and put together a composition taking in the entirety of this impressive valley. Normally wind here can be an issue, so I had scrambled up onto some boulders, figuring stationary rocks would make a nice stable foreground. When the sun rose it occurred to me that the valley, amazing as it was, lacked features and my rocks were a little boring.
The dreaded wind was entirely absent. Even the leaves of the trees were not moving. Reacting quickly I relocated to my backup position just as the sun found a gap in some low clouds and streamed light beams into the landscape. This composition was so much more complete, creating a nice balance between close elements, now perfectly still, and the distant hills bathed in that dramatic light.
So that is all I have for you this time. As always I big thankyou to everyone who has purchased a print, it really does help. I hope you are also able to find some soul restoring experiences in our beautiful natural world. Until next time, thanks for reading.
