Clarke Gorge is possibly the best short 5km nature walk in the northern end of Kosciuszko National Park. It weaves its way alongside and across Cave Creek which is dominated by spectacular 400 million year old limestone cliffs that rise dramatically above. With nearby camping facilities and several historic old mountain huts in the area, it makes for a wonderful family friendly, fairly tame destination so long as you pack the usual common sense regarding sun protection, snakes, weather and supervising children.

If you want to reach the beautiful Cooleman Falls, there will be no less than seven water crossings to negotiate. However, do not let that deter you. It is these very river crossings that give the trek its fun factor, increasing the challenge whilst simultaneously increasing the adventure. Likely you will be sharing the track with several other parties, many of whom pack a lunch to enjoy at the falls.

Over the course of a few trips I settled on using gum boots and keeping my feet warm and dry. However my needs as a landscape photographer involve standing in the cold river for extended periods whilst waiting for the light. My recommended approach for normal walkers would be using an old pair of sneakers and simply ploughing through the water which could nearly reach knee level at times. You would have to be a ninja to attempt rock hopping, and other methods such as sandals or even bare feet, lack the rock protection.

Obviously you will want dry boots waiting for you back at your car. I would also recommend trekking poles for balance or holding hands as needed. The fun factor here is high, and the walk one of the very best, particularly if it is a warm day and everyone enjoys getting a little wet, but that said a fall can still be serious.

Shot in the pre-dawn twilight this composition really took my fancy. However, there are a great many photographic opportunities along the river, which holds a certain kind of timeless magic that might need to be experienced to really understand. Hopefully this image brings some of that magic into a print. In summary, a highly recommend walk.

What shipping or freight charges apply?
Shipping charges apply with both printers and vary depending on the size of the prints and destination. The freight fee will be shown during your check out process. As a rough estimate, using the Australian printer (Red Bubble), a small print sent to Australia might incur shipping of only $5, while a large framed print might be $20 or more. The US Printer (Smugmug) charges more to ship to Australia, with fees going over $45 US for some larger items.
